Chapter One – 2024
If you’ve been following Jumpman Journals for a while you’ll know that every January we do a feature called Chapter One, which is a celebration of Air Jordan 1s. In February we’ll celebrate Jordan 2’s with Chapter 2, In March Jordan 3’s, and so on and so on.
Air Jordan 1s have been a sneaker Icon since 1985, the pair that changed the game forever.
The NBA banned the Jordan 1s stating they violated league rules with the black and red colourway, most basketball shoes at the time were predominantly white so this new bold colourway was considered a distraction. So each time Jordan wore them Nike had to pay a $5,000 fine, money well spent In my opinion.
Nike couldn’t have dreamed of a better marketing strategy and a launch pad to take the Air Jordan 1s, the Nike brand as a whole, and sneaker culture to heights it had never reached before.
The Air Jordan 1 Is arguably one of the most important sneakers In terms of its history, this shoe transcended the sporting arenas and took the streets by storm, although if my memory serves me correct, In the UK at least, Air Jordan wasn’t an absolute must until Air Jordan 3s.
With brand new colourways and old originals being released which seems like every month the popularity of this shoe has become unstoppable, and a go-to silhouette for the masses.
Whether you’re a fan of the Air Jordan 1 or not, it’s hard to deny their position within sneaker culture and beyond that their significance within sneaker history.
